A Foamy Shore

Another session, another pallette knife painting.

This one I made during a local gathering for painters in the town where I live, and was actually an attempt to paint over a church view I was pretty unhappy with.

To be able to paint over the church I needed to get a thick coat of paint on top of it, so I decided that a pallette knife panting would surely do the trick.

So I set to work, adding on the sky at first. After that I started to set up the outlines of a wave and a foamy sea below.

I ended the session dragging some white foam over the wave, to make it look a bit more energetic.

So basically, in 20 minutes I ended up creating a painting I was much more pleased with than the one I had used about four hours on…. Oh the irony.. 🙂

A Yellow Sundown

This is an acrylic painting I made a week ago.

I don’t know how I feel about it, really.

On the one hand, I do like how the mountains in the center ended up.

I used a pallette knife to kind of scrape the paint on, which made some paint from the yellow background shine through. A nice effect, I think.

On the other hand, I think the rest of the painting came out a bit.. hard.

The colours don’t mix harmoniously, and it ended up looking a bit messy.

I don’t know if I’ll keep this one, or clear the canvas and have a new go at something else.

But, as always, a new experience richer 🙂


Drawing a Face

One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that drawing people is hard.

Either the proportions are off, the movements unnatural or the faces way to crooked.

I’m still struggling painting realistic humans, but at least there are some progress when it comes to painting cartoonish people.

Even though I wish I was better drawing real looking people, I find it so much fun picking up my Ipad and making these digital, low-key versions.

My last go was at a pretty normal looking man, just walking around somewhere in the world.

I think he ended up pretty good looking, so I’m quite pleased with the result.

Hopefully I’ll get the skills to bring him to a real canvas sometime in the future 🙂


A late recap of 2018

2018 was the year I started exploring new mediums.

Starting out using watercolour I soon expanded to pen, pencil, marker, digital drawing and acrylics as well, wanting to try as many different mediums as possible.

The thought behind this was getting as versatile as possible, but also, in the long run, figuring out which mediums I want to spend more time working with in the future.

I have to say that digital drawing became a much bigger hit than I expected. I had a view on digital art not being “real art”, but I just got instantly hooked. It’s so easy to pick up on the go, and doesn’t create any mess at all (!)

It also give me the safety of practicing with a medium where I can undo my mistakes, as paintings are quite a bit less forgiving..

I still feel that water soluble oil is my main medium though, even though I found acrylics very pleasant to work with as well.

Drawing has also been a real pleasure getting more acquainted with, using both pencils and pens.

In 2019 I think I’ll be spending more time doing oils and acrylics, while trying to combine my drawing skills with more watercolour work.

I’m also going to continue drawing, as I think a nice, clean pen drawing can look really cool in a frame.

So, basically, I’m planning doing a bit of everything in 2019 as well.. I think this’ll make me a more complete painter and drawer in the end, but I also feel it’s a bit scary, as I don’t get the chance to really immerse myself in one field.

Anyway, this was a lot of rambling…..

The real reason I wanted to write this post was to show a photo which sums up some of 2018 for me.

It’s seven paintings I thought was OK when I made them, but has grown on me a bit with time. Now I find them quite nice, and lying together I think they kind of enhance each other:


Eyes, Eyes, Baby

This is a drawing I made a couple of days ago, when I had no specific plan of what I wanted to draw.

I started drawing an eye, and noticed that it actually looked a lot like some kind of insect.

So I started drawing more of them, varying some of the shapes and sizes.

With all the eyes looking at me in the end, I decided to add some writing.

What came naturally to me was the frase “Eyes, Eyes, Baby”.

11 new hours in 30 seconds (Pastel city)

A while back I did a post called 11 hours in 30 seconds, showing a digital drawing I made of a cartoonish street. It looked like this:

It ended up standing alone on my page, so I decided, since making the first one were such fun, to try and do another one.

In the new drawing I wanted to practice drawing people.

I saw a technique I wanted to try where you basically just make out the outlines of a human being, and start drawing in the details from there on.

This worked out quite nice, and, having drawn up a few people, I needed to put them somewhere. So I made a street for them to stand on and a city surrounding to put them in.

Being done with this the real work was about to start, as every person, buidling and street needed some colour and additional shadowing.

So I set to work, and the hours just piled up.

Funnily enough I ended up using about the exact same time drawing this one as the last one.

After about 11 hours of drawing in total (not continuously..) my head ached a bit, but I could finally put the pen down and have a look at the final result. This is how it looked:

I think it ended up rather nice. Since there’s a lot of pastel colours in the drawing I’ve given it the name “Pastel city”.
